Torch Chaser

February 12, 2010

So I decided that I’d let everyone watch the Opening Ceremonies on TV tomorrow night before I wrote my thoughts on them. They were incredible, but I don’t want to ruin the surprise. Some amazing performances by some great Canadians. There was one notable absence, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see that person tomorrow night for the real thing.

Anyways, on to today…

I met up with a few other volunteers this morning at the Countdown Clock. It’s still really hard to believe that there is only one day left until the Olympics officially begin. The clock is in Robson Square which is also the location of the CTV broadcast centre, British Columbia House and a giant zip line (weeee!)

The torch relay weaved its way through Vancouver today, and hearing that Jann Arden, Steve Nash, and Michael Buble would be carrying it at different stops, a few of us ventured out to see them. Jann Arden ran by the BC Children’s hospital just after 3:00. After she passed on the flame I was lucky enough to get a picture with her. (It’s on another volunteer’s camera, so I’ll have to post it later)

Next we went made our way to a corner in the suburbs where Steve Nash would be passing on the flame to the next bearer. When we arrived there were only a few people milling around. We positioned ourselves right on the curb and thought we would have an amazing view. Unfortunately the crowd kept getting bigger and bigger; and when Nash ran by people rushed right up to him to get pictures. I guess we underestimated the drive of dozens of teenage boys to get a glimpse of their basketball hero.

The final stop on our chase was the second last torch run of the night. Michael Buble brought the flame just outside of LiveCity Yaletown. The crowd down in Yaletown tonight was insane. Thousands and thousands of people were there to watch the torch’s second-to-last resting place. The crowd was so big that we could only get within 50 feet of where Buble passed on the flame.

So that’s where my celebrity sightings end for the day. Apparently Arnold Schwarzenegger is running with the torch through Stanley Park tomorrow. Yeah, I don’t get it either… won’t be waking up early to see that one.

Sounds great! Arnold was probably there because he was Mr Atlas or Mr Universe before Movies and California. keep up the great work. We’ll be watching with our red mitts on. Love Kath

I think you mean Gord Campbell.
However, both Gord and country singer Glen Campbell were recently charged with DUI.

Just watched the opening ceremonies. Pretty incredible stuff. I can only imagine what it would be like in person – lucky girl. Really enjoyed Katie Langs performance, but man does she ever need a new stylist.
    Keep it coming Jess
